Poddla: A Youtube to Podcast app
I recently found myself with some unwanted spare time. In an attempt to make the best of it, being a programmer, I thought I’d build something I’ve wanted to build for a long time. But before setting out to do that, I had some things I wanted to learn first. The best way for me to learn is to do. Doing a project of smaller scope would force me to go through all the things I wanted to explore without getting tangled in the intricacies of creating a more complex app, and actually being able to finish the project within reasonable time. Some of the things I wanted to explore aren’t really relevant until it’s time to deploy.
So, I needed a project of smaller scope. Bonus if it’s actually something that would be useful to myself.
Behold: Poddla, a web app that turns YouTube channels and playlists into audio podcasts. Read more about it in the README.
Things I wanted to explore:
The links lead to blog posts about the topic.
- Hosting python web apps on HTTP/2 end-to-end
- Improve static file hosting from python apps
- Come up with some patterns for how to use Datastar with Django
- Use Devenv to generate docker images
- Set up a Forgejo CI runner that can run jobs for my Devenv projects
- Set up a microvm.nix VM on my NixOS server for running Docker containers.
- Set up dev containers with Devenv (I didn’t get to this yet, but it’s a built in feature of Devenv)
- Create a
flake.nixwith a service definition to make it easy to install and run Poddla on NixOS.
I’d say this was a success. There are only a couple of unchecked checkboxes, and I hope to get to write about the rest.
